Visual Computing

Fraunhofer IGD is the international leading research institution for applied visual computing — image- and model-based information technology that combines computer graphics and computer vision. In simple terms, it is the ability to turn information into images and to extract information from images. All technological solutions by Fraunhofer IGD and its partners are based on visual computing.

In computer graphics, people generate, edit, and process images, graphs, and multi-dimensional models in a computer-aided manner. Examples are applications of virtual and simulated reality.

Computer vision is the discipline that teaches computers how to “see”. In the process, a machine sees its environment by means of a camera and processes information using software. Typical applications can be found in the field of Augmented Reality.

VCaaS: Visual Computing as a Service

If value chains change toward the digital world, suitable IT platforms are required to facilitate these changes. Our researchers at Fraunhofer IGD are working on developments tailored to specific applications. In the future, we will also provide our customers with the basic technologies we develop via a cloud-ready platform to allow them to design numerous other solutions.

Smart City

Comprehensive design concepts are used to make the cities of the future more efficient, more technologically advanced, greener, and more socially inclusive. These concepts are summarized under the title “Smart City”. These solutions target all areas of urban living.

Our core competence visual computing helps optimize infrastructures such as supply networks. It provides for sustainable development in urban settings, supports the energy turnaround, and drives intelligent living.

Individual Health

Every patient comes with a different medical history and responds differently to the medication administered. This is where “Personalized Medicine” comes into play. On the road to personalized medicine, the healthcare system must be completely modified. Part of the technological base is provided by visual computing. At Fraunhofer IGD, we assist this transition from classic to personalized medicine.

Digitized Work

In Industrie 4.0, modern internet technologies join forces with classic industrial production technologies across companies. A significant part of the enormous potential of Industrie 4.0 is cyber-physical equivalence, the coupling of data from the virtual and the real world. With visual computing methods, real environments, such as products and production processes, can be recorded and integrated into virtual worlds, such as 3D models and production planning.

Rapid prototyping in 3D printing: New pipeline brings increased efficiency and robustness

A new technique is increasing the efficiency of 3D printing at native device resolution, especially with multi-material jetting, aka Polyjet, printers. With the Cuttlefish® 3D printer driver, even the finest textures can be reproduced with efficiency and robustness at reduced file size – a decisive factor in any large print job. The results will be presented at SIGGRAPH 2021.

Ensuring diver safety during munitions recovery

A new research project has been launched to develop safety systems for divers tasked with salvaging wartime munitions that have been dumped at sea. Sensors alert the divers to acute levels of TNT and other hazardous substances, and an alarm system shows them the source of danger in real time by means of an augmented reality display inside their goggles.
