Aveiro
Aveiro is a dynamic, medium-sized city with about 75,000 inhabitants. It offers much of what big cities can offer, but without the urban chaos or loss of quality of life. Integrated into a region of great industrial development, Aveiro is nowadays a city of commerce and services, as well as a culture and leisure center.
It is also distinguished by a lagoon called Ria de Aveiro and its canals, navigated by colorful boats (barcos moliceiros), traditionally used to harvest seaweed. Not far from its core, known for art nouveau buildings, is the Cathedral of Aveiro, with its prominent bell tower. The Museu de Aveiro, housed in a former convent, has a lavish tomb made of marble.
Emblematic of the city is the sweet made with eggs and sugar – the “ovos moles” (soft eggs) that are sold in wooden barrels or wrapped in a crusty wafer in different shapes. But before this treat, you can comfort your stomach with the delights that the sea offers, such as shellfish, fresh fish grilled or casseroled, and eels, characteristic of this region, which are served casseroled or marinated.
Those who prefer more entertainment can head South to the Praia da Barra, where they will see the tallest lighthouse in the country, or the Costa Nova, known for its striped “sheds”.
